It’s NOT coming home: England vArgentina

Some things never change.

You would have thought that having the whole world rally their support behind an English side, including (indignant) countries who were once colonized by England could settle the matter of winning a world cup Semi-final, to go into the main Final.

As soon as the battle lines were drawn, England pressed their attack fiercely on their opponents but after the first half ended, neither team had had any upper hand, as the half ended goalless. England injected a great dose of excitement into their supporters when they secured the first goal after Gordon played right into a waiting net.

Then Tuchel’s side elected to play defense only. My amateur eye in football would not have chosen such a tactic. But well, we’re probably only amateurs in football. It seemed to be going well. And all of us were counting the minutes to 90 until the 85th minute. To be honest I felt they should attack rather than defend so hard. 10 minutes of added time, and Enzo Fernandez completely outwitted Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, and balled it to the back of the net, making for an equalizer so late in the scheduled time of play. Then Martinez scored the winner to completely extinguish England’s hope of bringing it home.

The mystery of Argentina always equalizing then winning after being down by a goal or more needs to be investigated. Is it really that they are more talented professional footballers than all the other teams? (I really don’t think so.)

Or is there something sinister that beckons a second thinking?
